- Offer your presence often.
- Be a good listener when they are ready to talk.
- Talk about things other than cancer.
- Say " I love you".
- Admit that you don't really know what to say when you
are at a loss for words.
- Ask what you can do to help. Be sincere and specific so
that they know that you mean it. Ask again in another week
or two.
- Offer to help by driving, helping with their kids, house
cleaning, gardening, caring for pets. shopping or running
errands.
- When you are thinking about them, call them up and talk.
- Respect how they choose to deal with their cancer.
- Be yourself.

- Tell them everything is going to be all right.
- Tell them you know how they feel (unless you have been
there)
- Be afraid to touch them, but don't force it either.
- Avoid the subject of cancer.
- Discount their feeling by telling them not to be scared,
not to worry, or not to cry.
- Tell them to think of all the good times.
- Share your advice unless asked.
