How to be a friend

Some hints when you are trying to help a friend or relative with cancer.

Do

Don't

  • Offer your presence often.
  • Be a good listener when they are ready to talk.
  • Talk about things other than cancer.
  • Say " I love you".
  • Admit that you don't really know what to say when you are at a loss for words.
  • Ask what you can do to help. Be sincere and specific so that they know that you mean it. Ask again in another week or two.
  • Offer to help by driving, helping with their kids, house cleaning, gardening, caring for pets. shopping or running errands.
  • When you are thinking about them, call them up and talk.
  • Respect how they choose to deal with their cancer.
  • Be yourself.
  • Tell them everything is going to be all right.
  • Tell them you know how they feel (unless you have been there)
  • Be afraid to touch them, but don't force it either.
  • Avoid the subject of cancer.
  • Discount their feeling by telling them not to be scared, not to worry, or not to cry.
  • Tell them to think of all the good times.
  • Share your advice unless asked.
